October 30, 2016 on Lake Manitou, Rochester, IN

This is Kahlo Challenge Kup Series Championship where we started with 24 Anglers but now we are down to the final 8 Anglers who are competing in the hopes of winning the Kahlo Kup. The first place Angler will win the Kup plus $3,000, second place wins $1,000 and third place $500. Today competing Anglers: Jacob Spencer from Cutter IN; BJ Butcher from Greentown, IN; Mike Botos from Indianapolis, IN; Mike Dove from Brownsburg, IN; Josh McDermott from Fishers, IN; Tony Goff from Fortville, IN; Ron Moody from Anderson, IN; Brian Roberts from Mulberry, IN.

The Lake: The Lake chosen for the Kahlo Kup Championship is Lake Manitou in Rochester, IN. This lake offers our Anglers plenty of docks, vegetation, coves and channels, rocky shores and more. Anglers were notified of the lake they would be fishing 48 hours prior to the start. We did not zone the lake giving the Anglers full access to the entire lake for all 3 periods. The day was broken up into three periods 2 ½ hours each with a 30 minute break between periods at a specific rendezvous point.

Conditions: Period 1 started at 8:30am to 11am with rain showers throughout the period, water temp 56 degrees and winds from the North Northeast at 15 – 20mph. Period 2 started at 11:30am to 2:00pm with no rain and cloudy skies, water temp remained in the mid 50’s degrees and winds from the North s at 15 – 20mph. Period 3 started at 2:30pm to 5pm with some blue sky popping through but finished with heavy cloud cover. Water clarity stained to muddy.

Period 1: Started in the rain but got off to a fast start with all eight Anglers making the Leaderboard catching a total of 30 Scorable Bass. Mike Dove jumped out to an early lead catching 6 fish for a total weight of 8lbs even followed by Mike Botos with 6lbs 13ozs and Jacob Spencer with 6lbs 12ozs. Things were shaping up to be a real battle with several Anglers fishing the same areas.

Period 2: The Leaderboard really began to heat up with Jacob Spencer taking a commanding lead 11 more Scorable bass for a total of 16 weighing 20lbs 2ozs pulling him clearly away from the field. The battle for 2nd and 3rd place was becoming the focus now with no one really out of it. Mike Botos maintained is second place position with 9lbs 11ozs followed by Mike Dove with 8lbs 13ozs, Josh McDermott with 7lbs 9ozs and BJ Butcher with 6lbs 3ozs. As a side note BJ Butcher’s trolling motor failed closed to the end of the 2nd period and it just so happened that his Boat Official Rob Kelley had a spare in his truck. So they hurried back to the ramp and between the 2nd and 3rd period replaced the trolling motor and was able to make the start of the 3rd period. There were a total of 23 additional fish caught the second period bring the total caught to 53.

Period 3: Jacob Spencer fished one area the whole day and it was a good thing he built up the lead in the 2nd period because he only caught 4 fish in the third for a grand total of 24lbs 04ozs but that was enough to seal a Championship win. The big move in the 3rd period came from BJ Butcher with a new trolling motor ready to do battle. BJ Butcher moved from 6th place to 2nd place by catching 11 fish in the third for a grand total of 18lbs 3ozs capturing second place. Mike Dove and Mike Botos battled against one another for 3rd place with Botos sealing the deal late in the 3rd period catching 3 more fish for a total of 13lbs 5ozs. Followed close behind by Mike Dove with 11lbs 5ozs.

The Strategies: Not a lot of strategies were revealed since Anglers were struggling to find a pattern. However Jacob fished all day in the same area, a grassy flat at the south end throwing a chatter bait and tube. BJ Butcher struggled until the third period but located a cove at the north end to produce a lot of bits. Mike Botos had an area at the mouth of the channel area on the lake that he kept returning to.

Penalties: Five Anglers were accessed penalties during the round for fish handling violations.
